In honor of Red Dawg Hot Yoga's 30 classes in 40 day challenge, I am posting a yoga story from my own personal story book each day.
Lesson 1: Slow down and listen.
Yoga helped me befriend my body. When I began practicing yoga in 2002, my body, mind and spirit were broken. I had chronic low back pain and frequent gramal seizures that inhibited me from driving and keeping a regular job. The physical limitations forced me to stop and learn how to take care of myself. I started going to yoga class regularly - once a week to an Iyengar class and twice a week to a kundalini class.
Attending regular classes began to heal my mind and how I viewed my body. Before I found yoga, I felt like my body was an enemy, something I had to control. My regular yoga practice helped me to embrace my body like a friend. Once I accepted my limitations and radiated love to myself, I began to heal.
In this way injury and limitation can be a gift. It’s a time when we are forced to stop everything to learn, experience, and be with ourselves.
