Yoga teaches me to surround myself with people who support my happiness doing good things in the world. There’s a great quote that says "You become the company you keep. So keep good company." When I first heard these words I simultaneously smiled and shuddered.
I smiled because I realized the power I had in choosing relationships that uplifted and supported me. I imagined the characteristics I wanted to embody: integrity, honesty, patience, kindness, prosperity, vulnerability, and the willingness to love and be loved. Then I shuddered because the company I'd chosen for myself was slightly out of alignment with my intentions.
And that's it. It's a choice. We pick who we want close. If I find myself complaining about how this or that person acts, I understand that I choose how much time I spend in their company. It's an empowering act to choose to be alone rather than spend time in the company of others who don't reflect who you are or want to be. When you make space, the right environments and people come around who support your highest good.
It's the alone time that can be the most challenging. But if you give it some time, your company will arrive.
